A day in the life of a designer | CharliMarieTV

Hey guys, welcome back to my channel. I’ve
got a bit of a different video for you today. A while ago, well actually quite a while ago
it was like a few months ago now, I watched a video by Ellen from Ellen’s in Wonderland
where she talked about her internship and what she got up to there and I found it really
interesting just to hear what a normal day in her work life was, because I feel like
aside from what I see in movies and TV shows and who knows how acurate they are, I really
don’t know what people in other careers get up to. So today I thought I’d tell you what
a normal work day for me looks like just in case you’ve ever been interested and wondering
what a designer gets up to on a day to day basis. So i should start off obviously by telling
you what my job is, and in case you didn’t know, I’m a marketing designer at Xero which
is a company that makes beautiful online accounting software.Being a marketing designer is pretty
much exactly what the name suggests, I basically design for Xero’s marketing. Whether that
involves websites or swag or tshirts, office signage, ads, maybe booths for events, it’s
really varied which is what I really love about it because there’s always something
different going on. I always start my day by checking my emails and I’ve read in tons
of blog posts and things that that’s not what you’re supposed to do, you’re supposed to
start off the day with a few tasks and like, get things done before you check emails but
being that we’re a global company I like to check first thing just in case anything has
come in overnight from one of the other regions in case there’s anything I need to action.
And then I get on with my task list. Normally before I leave work for the day I
set myself a little list of things to do the next day so then I know when I come in in
the morning exactly what I have to get on with, because mornings are tough. So then
I just get on with it basically. My job is fairly self-driven and by that I mean that
there’s not someone watching over me and asking what I’m doing every hour, I don’t have to
timesheet or anything like that which I really like I think its much better and you can be
more creative when you’re not having to worry about filling in a time sheet. I’m set briefs
by other team members of what they need, and we often have a lot of meetings and work through
things together to come up with a good solution. Something I really like about my job is that
I get to work with people who are from a lot of the other different areas of the business,
which is cool because it’s nice to get a glimpse into how other areas of the company work.
Most days I do spend the majority of my day, sitting at my desk, which I know is not good
for you but… I also usually come home on my lunch breaks
as well because I only live like literally maybe 4 or 5 minutes walk from work, so that’s
really good for a change of scenery and sometimes I can come and get a few things done off my
side-project to do list during my lunch break, so that’s good. I do really enjoy my days
at work though. I think I’m really lucky to have a job that I don’t dread going to if
that makes sense. Because I know when I used to work part time in retail I’d always be
like, ugh work today. i feel like with my job I really do enjoy going in and doing my
work every day so I think I’m really lucky in that sense. And that’s pretty much my day at work, I don’t
really know what else to say about it to be honest. I hope that you guys found that interesting.
I’d really be interested in hearing what a normal work day in your life involves or uni
day or wherever stage of your life you’re at. So leave a comment down below telling
me a little bit about that and let’s have a chat. As per usual, all my social media links and
the link to my blog are down below so you should go check them out and follow me if
you haven’t already, and I’ll see you guys next time. bye!

  1. Looks like you are very passionate about your work… which means you'll never really 'work' a day in your life. ๐Ÿ˜‰ That's awesome, nice video.

  2. That was really interesting. I'm studying PR and Advertising at school, so maybe one day my job might be pretty similar to yours! Right now I am a full time student and I work part time at a Sephora, so during the school year my work day usually consists of waking up early in the morning and going to university in the morning, and then coming home, getting ready for work, and heading to Sephora. I like working at Sephora, because I love makeup, but like most retail jobs sometimes it can be a little too much.

  3. Awesome video Charli! It's nice hearing what a Graphic Designer/Marketer gets up to (I'm majoring in Marketing). Your job sounds really cool! ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Awesome video Charli! My everyday routine seems to be all over the show at the moment as I'm coming to the end of an internship and I'm in & out of Uni the rest of the time. I actually only have three days of classes this semester so yeah, I haven't quite structured a new routine just yet but I am getting there, slowly. x

  5. Charli, I love hearing about design from you. I do not know of loads of Youtubers talking about it so I get really excited to watch your videos. I think it is truly inspiring that you work and still manage to upload regularly. I also think you are a really great teacher and explain things very well. I hope your day is lovely! (:

  6. What I find interesting is that even though we work for the same company, we really have no overlap. Though I start my day by checking my emails and Yammer too, as well as opening up my calendar to see if I have any meetings or training scheduled that day. I like to do this before I open up ticketing to see what work has been assigned to me, because it means I'm not rushing it to get started on work and I can take a chance to have a glimpse at what the rest of the company has been up to or if there's any news.

  7. I honestly loved this! i found it really interesting, so jealous (but happy for you ofcourse) that you do something you love !ย

  8. I loved this video! I'm about to graduate from university so seeing a day in the life of work is great!ย Lovely video xxx

  9. I have always wondered what designers do! This was very interesting Charli! In comparison to you, my part time job is pretty active!

  10. awesome! now when i brag about how i have awesome creative friends i know exactly how to explain it! ๐Ÿ˜€ my day normally involves, delegating, sorting out various customer related issues, and trying to feel like i'm keeping on task, but as i'm sure you know, it's rather hard to do that in retail sometimes! i think i need to take a page from your book and start getting back into writing myself 'to do' lists!ย

  11. @CharliMarieTVย  Hey Charli I've got a question. Have you tried working for say an agency or a design studio before? And what keeps you motivated and passion growing for design? I find that sometimes it can get quite draining creatively as designers who constantly churn out ideas at such tight deadlines

  12. I was thinking of studying design but I don't particularly like the idea of being sedentary. ย Do you choose to be or is it required to get your work done?

  13. Hey.
So I'm a thirteen year old girl going into eighth grade. In high school I'm going to a school and taking the communication arts program, specifically graphic design.
I may seem too young to be worrying about this but I've heard that graphic designers have a very low salary. I was wondering if a graphic designer could make a decent amount of money if they worked for a company like Xero instead of freelancing? I was just wondering because I live digital art but I don't want to end up getting little pay.

  14. Charli, I love your typography! I'm 17 and studying Graphic Design (one of my A-Levels) but it's what I dedicate all my time to. ๐Ÿ™‚ I want to be a designer and I'm hoping to do an art foundation next year, did you do an art foundation? I really like package design most of all but I'm starting to find type really interesting after a hand-lettering workshop I went to this week. I tried calligraphy with a brush pen (varying degrees of success) and I think it sounds like something really cool to get into. How do you manage to find work in type and things though? Prints and t-shirts, when there are so many other freelancers doing type themselves? Could you do a video showing us your pen collection? Too many questions, sorry! ๐Ÿ™‚
